Time and tides wait for no man

IMG_8523

This may have been my cousin John, or else I surely zoomed in from a far to get this perspective. Perhaps I took this after getting my first sports lens (which was really generous of my family to indulge me with). I no longer remember.

Surfing is something I enjoy watching quite a bit more than doing. On this particular morning I’m sure the water was bitter cold, and even those booties and a wetsuit wouldn’t be enough to get me in those great white shark waters, with the Farallon Islands just offshore. But you don’t have to twist my arm to watch “The Endless Summer,” “Riding Giants,” or “Step Into Liquid.”

Gradient Rose

This is from the Rose Garden at the entrance to my old boarding school, Cate, in Carpinteria. Carpinteria, Montecito, and Santa Barbara are just beautiful. I loved being outside there. I would run three miles from the top of The Mesa into town almost every day, and longer, down to at least the Seal Sanctuary on weekends. Carp was a small town where I usually felt very safe, which meant getting to run without my phone or headphones, without feeling exposed and self-conscious.

Human Parallel

This isn’t a particularly good photo… but I found these set of people highly amusing, as if it was some small glitch in the matrix or something.

The Misanthrope

This photo seemed to capture a feeling I have sometimes, a sort of quiet loneliness. At the time I took this photo my favorite movie was The Art of Getting By, so I was listening to the song Winter Lady by Lady Cohen, a rather melancholy song, and Broken Bells for much of the trip.

You see it too, right? The parallels?

Worship in The City

Not a particularly impressive photo but I love the pop of color from the greenery and the cabs against the washed stone here.

Tahitian Church

IMG_4269

I did a really cool wooden block print with hot wax of this beautiful old church we drove past on my spring break abroad trip to Tahiti in high school. The highlight of this trip, aside from the delicious food (pain coco, fresh papaya with lime, and poisson cru), was the fact that there was a tsunami warning while we were there.

Me and my freshman year roommate were staying with the same host family. They came into our room in the middle of the night and woke us up to let us know that Emily’s mom had called them concerned because of the warning. I was groggy but I had my priorities straight. I announced that my shorts were hang drying on the clothes line outside, shrugged, then promptly fell back asleep.

In a close second, was when I forced Emily to apply aloe (very delicately) all over my naked body while I stood in front of a fan because I had 2nd degree sunburns on 80% of my body from snorkeling without sunscreen.

Third place goes to swimming with and feeding sharks and rays while I was on my period. The rays were hilarious. Their mouths are on their bottom side, so when they present their mouth for food it’s like they a flapping trying to hug you.
